About The Founder
Dave Teitler has been involved with teaching and practicing karate, tai chi, yoga and qigong for over 40 years. At age 23, Dave took up Shotokan Karate at George Cofield’s Utica Avenue dojo in Brooklyn. He trained with George Cofield for one year, and began to train in Shoto Kai Karate with Rick Lenchus at his Coney Island, Brooklyn dojo. Dave learned and practiced with Rick for over 25 years. He earned a 3rd Degree Black Belt from the Legend Association, headed by Rick Lenchus. In search of spirituality, Dave started to practice Tai Chi Chuan with Lou Kleinsmith, a senior student of Cheng Man Ching at the Shur Jung Tai Chi Study Group on the Bowery in New York City. Dave stayed with Lou Kleinsmith until he passed away, and continued practicing at the Shur Jung with his senior students. Again, feeling the longing for a spiritual connection, Dave took up yoga and eventually found a new teacher, Alan Finger. At that time he started to practice Ishta Yoga, and continues his relationship with Alan to this day.
At age 21, Dave received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He practiced Civil Engineering for five years before going into business with his father at Teitler Linen Service in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After five years Dave founded Temo Sales, a paper, plastic and cleaning supply redistributor, servicing distributors in the tri state area. During the course of building Temo into a medium-sized company, he was instrumental in forming Redistributors of America, a national association of redistributors, and served as their President for two years. In December 2004 Temo was sold to Bunzl USA, a national company. Dave stayed on for two additional years until his recent retirement.
The time spent with Temo as a vocation and with Internal Arts Study as an avocation placed Dave in a unique position. Dave credits his Internal Arts Study as a foundation on which he built Temo into a mid-sized company. Many of the lectures posted weekly on this site will reflect his unique view of business success while maintaining a true spiritual connection. Dave is presently the Director of the Physical Arts Department and the Chair of the Yoga Department at the New York College for Health Professions in Syosset, New York. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the College and currently teaches yoga, tai chi, and qigong. Dave is also a member of the Legend Martial Arts Association and is a Yoga Alliance registered teacher. He lives in Long Island, New York with his wife, and enjoys spending time with his five children and four grandchildren.
